Scagliola tiles

Scagliola is a 16th century technique invented in Bavaria and popularised in Italy. The laborious process involves mixing gypsum plaster with natural glues and handcolouring with pigments to imitate the marble decoration found in grand palaces of the Renaissance.

Luxury floor specialists De Ferranti have given scagliola a contemporary spin with this eye-catching monochrome design, above. And below we show some more traditional ‘marble’ patterns. They all have a highly-polished smooth finish, and are available as 25cm tiles or bespoke installations (£3,000 a sq m).
